Artifact 5- Higgins Boat
The Higgins boat, dubbed the "Eureka", played a significant part in the transportation of soldiers in WWII. This boat was roughly thirty feet long, ten feet wide, and it's main feature was a ramp in the front of the boat which allowed soldiers to unload easily through the front instead of jumping over the sides. This was used to quickly unload soldiers on the shores of battle. Andrew Higgins was the inventor of the boat, which is where it got it's name from. More than 20,000 of these boats were manufactured for battle by Higgins Industries. The boat could hold roughly 36 passengers at a speed of fourteen miles per hour. The Higgins boat also featured machine guns in the back of the craft. Dwight Eisenhower stated that the Higgins boat was a huge factor in defeating Italy and North Africa. He also declared "Andrew Higgins is the man that won the war for us. If Higgins had not designed and built those LCVPs, we never could have landed over an open beach. The whole strategy of the war would have been different."
